In December, Pantone, the renowned global authority on color, announced their 2019 color of the year: Living Coral. It’s a 20-year tradition of selecting the color of all colors that will influence product design, making its visual presence into just about every industry for the year.
According to the Pantone website, their designated color of the year is “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” What’s more is that the color experts at Pantone opted to name this shade Living Coral, which some have speculate is in good effort to bring awareness to healthy, living (or lack thereof) coral reefs across our oceans.
Dissecting the Color Coral
With tinges of reds, pinks, and oranges, the color coral can be interpreted in a wide variety of hues. Depending on the dominant base color (i.e. yellow/orange vs. red/pink), and the intensity of the tint, shade or tone, the complementary color will vary.
PMS Colors, CMYK, and Branding
The CMYK color model (4 color process) allows for detailed color matching by way of subtracting and/or layering various intensities of cyan, magenta and yellow to achieve a desired result, making it possible to translate PMS colors into CMYK. This is especially important in recreating company logos and colors that are brand compliant, ensuring the right amount of key (black) is administered to achieve the right shade of teal, and so forth. And with SimpliColor® CMYK processing, virtually any color is within reach for application on branded items like writing instruments and stationery.
Did you know… Shades are achieved by adding black, tints are achieved by adding white, and gradient tones are achieved by adding gray?
